How I crafted a jewelry virtual try-on experience

Duration 1 month Spring 2023

CS purchase progress

Project Overview

Clean Origin is a lab diamond jewelry retailer. The company wanted to create a virtual jewelry try-on experience on it’s website. The Augmented Reality has made this experience possible from a technology stand point. I was tasked to craft the experience for the web store. This project focuses on Competitive Analysis, onboarding experience, UI design and visual design.

My Responsibilities

  • Competitive Analysis
  • Discovery & Ideate
  • UI & Visual Design

Tools

  • Miro
  • Figma
  • Axure RP

Problem Statement

Shopper needs a way to try-on their jewelry before purchase without visiting the physical store. How can I craft this experience that’s easy to onboard, intuitive to engage and drive the conversion?

Goals

To craft a virtual try-on experience based on competitive analysis and market trend. To generate design concepts for potential A/B testing and further user research.

Insights & Discoveries

After analyzing 3 major competitors Reza, James Allen, Brilliant Earth, I gained the following insights and learnings.

Insufficient
Onboarding

All 3 competitors invested minimum effort in helping the shopper to understand this relatively new Augmented Reality technology and how it works with trying out a ring.

Inaccurate
Modeling

Photo based AR ring is not accurate and unstable when superimposed over a static photo which doesn’t provide adequate spacial data such as angle, perspective and scale.

Variations
& Options

Offering different style, material and color selections increases the shopper engagement with the experience. It can also improve conversion rate.

Onboarding Experience

I crafted the Onboarding Experience which consists 4 steps. Each step is visually assisted by 4 delightful micro animations to illustrate the process of virtual try-on. The shopper can skip the onboarding by simply tapping “I’m ready”.

Try-On Experience Design

I presented two design directions for the ring style selections. One is the horizontal scrollable thumbnail gallery(left). The other approach was to click “Try another ring” to spawn a new full screen menu where the shopper can select a new ring style from all available options. The shopper can also change the ring material colors to fine tune the virtual try-on.

Impact, Results & Next Steps

The Clean Origin virtual try-on was a project to present my vision on how to leverage augmented reality technology to fulfill a shopping experience. I successfully crafted a solid experience and delivered design artifacts in highest quality based on competitive analysis. The design prototypes I created would be used for further research and A/B testing which can provide more data to guide the development and adoption of this feature.
